The Avalache Safety Party was a Success at Salt Lake Surf

The Avalanche Awareness Party at Salt Lake Surf was a great time!  Logan from BCA came in a gave a presentation about avalanche safety and prevention. 

Forrest Shearer came in and hung out in the shop and talked about intense back country riding.

Parker from Wasatch Podcast showed off an awesome video of him and some friends splitboarding.

Kelly from Splitboard Education Company showed how to set up and remove skins and answered any technical questions about split boarding. 


Other reps from Voile, Dakine, Pieps, Utah Avalanche Center came in to support the shop!


The beacon scavenger hunt went great and all of the beacons were found.  I guess I can trust my life to the one's involved!

There was beer and snacks and education!

It was awesome to hang out with Pros and Reps that know a bunch about splitboarding!

Racing on a Stand Up Paddle Board in Salt Lake

Salt Lake Surf is Hosting an Avalanche Awareness Night!!

Here at The Salt Lake Surf Co we keep things casual and create an environment for people that SUP Utah's lakes.  We strive to have an inventory of whitewater kayaks for Utah rivers, and provide some chill, utah surf clothing.

For fall and winter we are changing things up a little bit with some back country safety gear and split boards for Utah's mountains.

To kick the season off, we are having an Avalanche Awareness Night, November 3 at 7pm!!

This night is going to be a lot of fun, and you might just learn some things in the process.

Its going to include

• Avalanche Awareness presentation
• Information about how to protect yourself from in the back country from avalanches and how to handle situations that may arise

• Back Country Access (BCA)
• Reps will be in the shop talking about avalanche safety and rescue

• Local company Voile will have a rep in the shop to answer questions

What is Stand Up Paddle Boarding Salt Lake?

Stand up paddle boarding in Salt Lake is a new trend, but that doesn't mean that stand up paddle boarding or paddle surfing hasn't been around for a while. It originated in Hawaii, of course, in the 1960s, when surfers would stand up on their longboards and paddle out into the break to take pictures of others learning to surf.

50 years later, stand up paddle boarding has spread to every area along the coast and even inland to places like Salt Lake City.  There are numerous reservoirs and lakes near Salt Lake City to stand up paddle on.

The reason for the rise in popularity is the ease of stand up paddle boarding. Unlike surfing, which takes months and even years to get good at, after a few hours you can be comfortable on a stand up paddle board.  Paddle boarding does not require waves either, so you are not restricted to coastlines.

Surfing uses the force created by waves to propel you through the water.  SUP'ing comes with a paddle. So you simply stand on the board and push yourself through the water with your paddle.

That doest mean that you can't surf on them though. With a stand up paddle board you can travel long distances through the water, find waves to surf, and ride them all  day.  Its a great workout and will keep you in shape during the summer.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding on the Great Salt Lake (Antelope Island)

Jay Hill and I are on a paddle boarding search for waves on the Great Salt Lake. Will we find waves, doubtful, but you never know. I think the greatest part of this search is the adventure, and the exploration of the Great Salt Lake. We started with just a simple paddle launched from Antelope Island. I was instantly blown away with the pure beauty of the island. It is hard to believe we were the only ones out there. We kept finding ourselves stopping and just standing in awe of the landscape. For a lake that gets such a bad rap I don't get it. Maybe this is one of those, "shhhh, don't let the secret get out" things.

Salt Lake Surf has Moved its Water Sport Inventory!!

 

We are moving and changing the name of the shop.

We are now The Salt Lake Surf Company.

We will be continuing to sell stand up paddle boards and kayaks, but will be spreading our inventory to include summer clothing, gear, and winter sport supplies like split boards, avalanche safety equipment and winter clothing.
We have a great new location at 1117 East 2100 South, but the new shop needs a ton of work. Here is what it started out like. I plan to post blogs as we go so if you want to follow the progress you can.

Stand Up Paddling is an up and coming sport that originated in the Hawaiian Islands, but is rapidly growing in popularity all over the world. Providing an excellent full body workout with emphasis on your core, SUP is greatly used as a training tool by athletes. Salt Lake City's Surf Shop is Open For Business

The long awaited event is here, Salt Lake Surf is OPEN! We worked long and hard for many months and the shop looks FABULOUS. We are busting down the door with incredible gear to get you through the summer. We have stand up paddle boards and paddles, white water kayaks and gear, pfd's, dry tops, bathing suits, and super stylish clothing that will surely get people asking "Which way to the Beach?" We are getting new things in everyday and would love to see you and show you what we've got.

Never stand up paddled before? Not a problem! We will be having Demo Days this summer to get people on our SUP boards, stop by and sign up on our e-mail list to be notified when those will be!

Have questions about kayaking? We have got the answers for you, from "What the heck is it?" to "Where should I go?" we will point you in the right direction.

Utah's New Surf and Paddle Board Shop is About to Arrive!!

We have been working hard all winter on fixing up the new location. We are going to open a few weeks later than originally planned. We are shooting for the first week of April now. We will give an exact date soon. Here are some photos from the shop remodel. We are so excited about the new space and can't wait to get the doors open.  Before you know it, our shop will be packed with water sport equipment like stand up paddle boards, paddles, kayaks, water safety gear, surf clothing, and more!!
